Excerpt from The General State of Medical and Chirurgical Practice, Ancient and Modern, Exhibited For various reasons, particularly to prevent abuse, sophistication, or misapplication, I have made it an invariable rule in every case, internal and external, to exhibit my medicines, and to make every application with my own hands. - Indeed they are of so curious and important a nature, as scarcely to permit, were I so inclined, of a deviation from that rule. They cannot be applied with advantage but with my own hand; then, alone, can I answer for their effects. I hope, therefore, that no one will give me the pain of refusing, by desiring me to depart from my usual, fixed, and determined plan. As to the terms, they are regulated by the abilities of the patient, the nature of the case, and the degree of relief that can be afforded.
